Newborn Photography: Keeping it Safe

Newborn Photography vs. Lifestyle Photography

The incredibly creative and amazing poses and positioning of trendy newborn photography can amaze people. Newborn photographers go through many miles of training and certification to achieve their craft and talent in order to ensure the safety of their newborn subjects.

While I specialize in motherhood photography and lifestyle photography, I do not have the training and certifications specific to newborn photography. I will own that, I will tell you why I choose (for now) to focus my craft and skill on Lifestyle Photography.

A Family-Friendly Alternative to Newborn Photography

While Newborn Photography can be visually alluring and certainly a wonderful keepsake, my family lifestyle sessions have a particular focus on storytelling and bringing the pieces of your family together through various shots, posing, styling, and captures that work with a natural environment and the relationship between my subjects.

I do newborn photography that involves simple props, swaddling, and staging–but what I do does not involve extensive posing with composite shots and the necessity for assistants to prop and support the baby in impossible poses. This is not my focus at this time, and I am happy to chat with you more about that.

Newborn & Milestone Motherhood Photography

If you are looking for a photographer in the Central Florida area who specializes in the ages and stages of newborn and milestone photography, my approach may be ideal for you. I love to capture maternity photos, family portraits, and siblings in all combinations. Generational portraits and motherhood photos are my very favorite because of the opportunity to dive deep into the stages of motherhood and show the evolution of families as they grow and welcome new additions, meet exciting milestones like kindergarten back-to-school, sibling throwbacks, and all kinds of reunion and milestone photography.

I also do safe poses with siblings and newborns, and will utilize baskets, blankets, swaddles, props and settings that offer a photogenic boon to your session. Siblings are caught in the excitement and wonderment of posing and playing with the newborn sibling, and these laidback sessions focused on storytelling offer a unique glow of authenticity.

Newborn Posing vs. Lifestyle

Newborn posing requires an incredibly controlled environment, not just for the sake of baby’s safety, but also for the controlled lighting and setting required for composite shots that are almost always involved in producing safe newborn photos.

Looking for posed newborn shots? I recommend checking out the certifications and qualifications of any photographer you may choose. Want to chat about a beautiful lifestyle session that may offer more variety and nuance across the entire shoot? I cannot wait to be in touch.

There is No Right or Wrong in Family Photography

There isn’t a right answer in choosing the kind of newborn and family photography you wish for yourself. I have set out here to point out some differences between newborn photography and lifestyle photography, and clarify my focus and discipline as a photographer specializing in lifestyle and motherhood photography. I personally do not hold the certification for newborn photography, and my goal is to be perfectly upfront with my clients about that.

I love the adorable and impossible magic created through newborn photography, and certainly admire those who choose that path in their skillset. I applaud and lift up photographers who seek proper training and the right credentials and certifications to offer newborn photography–but it scares me to see that some newborn photographers do not practice safe newborn photography and I feel it is a professional duty to clarify to the community of moms and families interested in newborn photography the sheer importance of finding a properly trained and certified newborn photographer.
