Hi There!
For many of you I am sure you are wondering what exactly a motherhood photographer is.. well, let me explain.
As photographer’s we are certainly able to photograph pretty much everything and most of us do in the beginning. I have photographed kids, families, babies, seniors, pets, you name it! For me, there came a point where certain sessions no longer excited me. I didn’t feel that spark that I am always chasing. I knew it was time to start niching down or specializing in a certain type of photography.
I started to pay attention to the sessions that did excite me. I started to be more conscious of myself and how I was feeling, was I excited or anxious, was I feeling my creativity or just going through the motions.
I began to realize that I had a sincere connection to the motherhood session I was doing.. the maternity, newborn and family sessions. Since before I even picked up my camera to photograph other people, birth was something that I was so fascinated by! The moment I realized that birth photography is a real thing, I knew that I had to incorporate it into my niche.
Any time I shoot a motherhood session I get what I call butterflies, it’s a skip in my heart when I capture a beautiful moment. I have had quite a few jobs but, never one that made me feel the way motherhood photography does.
I am currently enrolled in The Beauty In Birth, Birth Photography Certification course and will begin scheduling birth stories this year! Why, do you need a certification to photograph a birth you ask?
You technically don’t, it’s not a law or anything…. but, a woman’s birth space is a very special place and the energy and emotions that come into that space can affect how the birthing mom progresses through her journey. It is also very important to understand that your birth photographer is a part of your birth team and should conduct themselves in that way. There are also many technical aspects of birth photography that a portrait photographer never deals with, such as hospital lighting, shooting in very very low light, and dealing with difficult birth situations. There is so much more I want to tell you about this topic so I am going to write a whole post dedicated to Birth Photography!
So, I hope this answered your question about what Motherhood Photography is and why I chose to specialize in this niche!
